Each provider runs their own business. Their schedules, prices and services differ. That is why it helps to ask good questions.

What they will ask you

Expect a few simple questions. Having answers ready makes the conversation quicker:

• What is the door doing, or not doing?
• Did you hear a loud bang before it stopped?
• Is the door single, double or insulated, and roughly how old?
• Does the opener hum, click or stay silent?
• Is a car stuck inside?

Photos or measurements can help, but they are not required.

Questions worth asking a provider

Ask, then decide. A confident provider will not mind any of these.

• Will I get a written quote before work starts? A good answer is yes, with parts and labor listed.
• What could change the price? Look for a clear reason, such as a bent track or a worn cable.
• Are you licensed and insured where required? You should get a straight answer.
• Is there a warranty on parts and labor? Ask for the terms in writing.
• When can you visit? Availability varies, so an honest estimate is better than a big promise.

Red flags

Be careful if someone refuses to quote, pushes you to decide on the spot, or asks for a large payment up front. A vague price with no breakdown is also a warning sign.
